Self Portrait

A subject I approached with dread.

An explanation of the structure of the face and how to mix skin coloured tones was explained during the class session.

My first attempt was a total disaster. I worked solidly for a couple of hours, and when happy with how it was progressing decided to blue tac it to a white wall that had different lighting conditions. This was a lesson to be learnt, stand back and look at regular intervals!

Half of my face looked like it had been out in extreme heat and sun with no suncream, it looked like a lobster. I thought I had done excellent shading until I stood back to look. I immediately repainted over most of the face with the base coat (unfortunately forgot to take a photo of the disaster). Thank goodness I had made a tub full of the base colour.

I then set about my 2nd attempt.

This time I looked like I have been beaten up, but the representation was quite apt when taken in context with my ‘Identity’ project. Overall I was please with the result and decided to leave it with the then and now context.

Taking into consideration my Identity project the picture depicts a person that has perhaps been a victim. It could represent the huge issue of ‘hidden abuse’. If somebody is showing signs of physical abuse it is easily identified (although usually still ignored), but nobody can see the extent of behind closed doors hidden abuse.

I did actually copy my own image. Half of my face was in shadow, the other half in very bright artificial light. My colouring is quite red at times, especially on my cheeks and the comparison was quite life like that evening, despite not having any bruises as the picture suggests.

I then tried a second attempt in a contemporary style.

And a third…….

spot the mistake??
