practical work creating the spider’s web

Using the photo of the spiders web with some thin gauze material I decided to hand stich a web onto the material.

I first traced the web onto the material with tailor’s chalk and then used contrasting colour of stitching to sew the web. The initial attempt involved stitching each small section before moving to the next. This was very time consuming and not quite the result I was looking to achieve. I then made the decision to stitch the long star shape before using a ‘spinning technique’ similar to the actual spider’s method. Again trial and error eventually made the final decision about the stitching teqnique. Each joint needed a small back stitch to keep the web looking geometric.

Having been inspired by the Kennard faces I wanted to try collagraph printing of the web onto thin transparent material to use with either a sculpture or picture of a victim.
